Renaming movie files

Downloaded files are named by whoever uploaded them. Once the collection knows what each file actually is, the program can rename the files on the disk to match — in one pass, from a template.

Tools › Rename movie files…

  1. Choose what to work on: All or Selected movies, and Movies or TV Series — series have their own placeholders and their own template.
  2. Pick a template from the drop-down or type your own. A few ready-made ones are offered, such as <title>(<year>), <genre>\<title>.<year>.<quality> and, for series, <title>\Season <season>\<epnum> - <eptitle>. Templates you type are remembered.
  3. Press Preview. Two columns appear: the existing file names and what they would become. Read them.
  4. Press Apply.

The paths stored in the collection are updated at the same time, so playback and playlists keep working.

Placeholders

The window lists them all; the ones in daily use are:

Your own custom fields are available too. A backslash in the template creates folders, which is how the series example above produces a Season 2 folder per season. Replace spaces with underscores is there for file systems and players that dislike spaces.

Renaming changes files on your disk and cannot be undone from inside the program. Always read the preview, and try it on a handful of selected movies before letting it loose on the whole collection. Files that are open in a player cannot be renamed; the program lists which ones it could not handle.

Renaming and copying go together: rename in place first, then copy to the player — the names arrive already tidy.
