Usually such kind of problems is because of the video codecs pack installed. It is difficult to say what exactly codec you need to reinstall.
try to install KLite codecs pack, for example |

i have divx 5.2.1 i xvid 20.12.2004
movie is divx
with ffdshow too |

Hey
If you use WMP 9 or 10 :
Go to extra - options - prestations
the acceleration of the video must be put to 'none'
now try to take a screenshot now
normally it must work !!!
