Hi,

I tried the All My Movies 4.9 from giveawayoftheday.com and found that it stops connecting to the online database for obtaining DVD information using barcodes (presumably because I need an update which would invalidate the license), then I tried the version from the PC Authority magazine and that too stopped getting DVD information from the database when I enter a barcode.

So, a few questions:
1) Is there some workaround?
2) If I buy a license and a new version is released, I guess I will always have to pay to upgrade because updates will not be made anymore for the old versions? Is that correct?

Unfortunately, no workaround.
If you buy the licence now, all 6.х versions you'll get for free. All fixes are made only for the most recent version.

1) NO!

2) Yep you're right. The Bolidesoftware motto here is: "We make moneymaking for ourselves easier, by issuing new releases/updates"

I recently purchased a licence for amm5.x (actually I bought 2, for my 2 pc's) and I am now oblidged to buy new licences for version 6.
And let's face it, version 6 comes out because of major "screw-ups or limitations" in previous versions.

Obviously I don't know if you've already purchased a licence but when you did, congrats it's definately slick software but when it comes to charging for so called major updates which are in fact coverups for mistakes made known to them by means of this forum is questionable...

Take care, betweter@freeforward.nl

Hi, Ronald56!

There's some misunderstanding, I suppose. Actually, you're NOT obliged to buy version 6.0, if you bought version 5.x... Keep using it. If you want a major update, you (all registered users) get a 50% discount.

By the way, if you do want 6.0 update, you can buy only one licence and activate All My Movies on two computers of yours.

Hi,
No I'm not obliged to I know that. Version 5 is still functioning, but it's lacking features and corrected bugs from version 6.
A great bug is the way an update on imdb totally ruins your carefully created custom titles and does "scrolling issue" ring any bells?

I purchased with: SWREG ORDER NUMBER: U656632801 (dec 20th)
A mere 7 months later I need to pay again ( 50 %)???

Even Micro$oft doesn't pull a stunt like that when they release critical updates to repair the leaks in Explorer...

For now I've disabled automatic updates for amm...

Regards, Ron

I think Roland56 is a little harsh, but he does have a point.

You could say that it is stretching it a bit to call 6.0 a major update.

If we look at the new features:

- added: network mode. You can use one shared database file from several computers at once
>This was already possible in version 5.x. You just had to copy your files to a network drive.

- added: ability to set password for database changes. If the password set, the database opened in read-only mode by default.
>This is a useful feature, but should really be standard in any multiple user database.

- added: getting movie details from IMDb.fr, IMDb.de, IMDb.es
>Nice, if you live in one of those countries...

- added: displaying movie titles that hasn't cover images in the virtual shelf mode
>Doesn't really count as a 'feature' in a major update, and I guess most use covers anyway..

- added: new help file
>Again, not really a 'feature', but something that should just be there.

- added: "Get more details" option to Preferences, "Online databases" tab
> I am not really sure what this adds. Better description please.

- added: an ability to download better movie plot summary from IMDb (with "Get more details" option)
>I guess this is the same 'feature' as the one above?

- added: "set up marks" menu item to all "personal marks" menus
>Not really a 'feature', but more optimisation of existing feature.

Some of the above new 'features' are probably nice for some users, but I think it would have pleased even more users, if some of the major bugs/annoyances had been fixed Wink

Maybe a little harsh in Pallec's view but certainly too harsh according to the board's editor(s). Hence they editted my post here without even having the courtesy of letting me know.
This shows they don't like comments on their update policy ie charge for every flaw or error in the progam that's got corrected.

Like I said I'll stick with release 5.9 en maybe considder buying release 12.0 in a year or so provided it does prove to be a usefull upgrade indeed and bolidesoft is not bankrupt by that time...

And I have reason to believe I'm not the only one who thinks like me.

I must agree with earlier posts, it's hard to say that 6.0 is major update. Almost nothing is upgraded.

For me major update would be:

adding a new field (for example, composer field)

adding personal user ratings next to imdb ratings, also displaying ratings with stars and numbers at the same time

optimizing application to work faster especially with tv series with a lot of information (episodes description...)

ability to update only one or more specific fields from imdb

and so on

For me, in this version only major update is possibility to get better plot description from imdb, and displaying bigger cover thumbnails in covers view, but this is not enough for new major version in my opinion

I pay about 2 euro each month to get a moviedatabase that keeps track of all the movie's i have and works. And i'm happy with it. If you don't want to do that there are several free options to do something else. Get a c.r.a.c.k.e.d one (that's how i started with this one) or go to some other free program like http://www.emdb.tk/

I hope you don't use TomTom. That would cost you 3 times that much. Very Happy

I don't want to judge EMDB or compair it to AMM.
I haven't even tried the EMDB program so who am i to judge it.
I just used it as a example of a free movie database.

I won AMM 5.9 with the lottery, and now just a few months later, I have to pay for the update! Sad It's like when you win with a normal lottery and after a few months all the winnings are gone... Crying or Very sad

Orlik, why buy any updates? Keep using the version you won.

Because, after a while, the import of imdb doesn't work properly anymore and there are a lot of bugs in the export to html online db

I like AMM very much. But, I must admit, that if things like updating the IMDb script only is going to be included in new non-free updates, then I am back to Movie Collector. At least they update things like that for free.

Hope it won't come to that Sad
